FAQs

What is counselling?

Counselling is a collaborative process in which a client meets with a trained counsellor in a private and confidential setting to explore difficulties they may be facing, distress they are experiencing, or a general sense of dissatisfaction with life.

It offers a safe, non-judgemental space to talk openly about thoughts, feelings and experiences. Through thoughtful listening, reflection and gentle challenge where appropriate, counselling can help bring greater clarity and understanding to complex emotions or situations. It can support clients in making sense of past experiences, navigating present challenges, and considering meaningful changes for the future.

Counselling is not about being given advice or being told what to do. Rather, it is about being supported to better understand yourself, develop resilience, strengthen coping strategies, and make informed choices that feel right for you. The pace and focus of the work are guided by your individual needs and goals.

How long is each session?

Sessions last for 50 minutes.

Please note that if you arrive late, the session will still end at the scheduled time. This helps ensure that the following client is seen on time.

How do I book a session?

Before we have our first session, we’ll arrange a free 20-minute assessment call. You can book one through the contact page or by emailing hello@fundamentalcounselling.co.uk

What happens on an assessment call?

An assessment call takes place before your first session and is not a counselling session. The purpose of the call is to understand your current difficulties and what you hope to gain from counselling. It also provides an opportunity to gather some background information and ask a few questions to better understand your situation before the work begins. This conversation allows us to decide together whether counselling feels right for you at this time, and whether I am the right counsellor for you. I will then take your availability and get back to you with options for your first session.

Do you offer counselling to women?

Yes, women are absolutely welcome. I have experience working with both men and women, and many past clients have found working with a counsellor of the opposite gender to be extremely beneficial, offering valuable perspectives and insights. Please don't be put off, get in touch to see how I might be able to support you.

How many sessions can I have?

This will be discussed during your assessment call. Typically, we agree on an initial block of sessions (often around six). As we approach the end of that block, we review progress together and discuss whether to continue. If so, we then agree on the next set of sessions. This approach ensures you always know where you stand and helps keep our work focused and purposeful.

Where does the session take place?

I work from several locations across West Dorset and East Devon, including Lyme Regis, Axminster, and Bridport. This range of locations provides greater flexibility for both session times and travel. I also provide sessions online.

Is what I tell you kept confidential?

In almost all cases, yes. Any exceptions to this will be explained in full prior to commencing our work together.

Can I bring someone with me?

Unfortunately not. Counselling takes place in a private and confidential setting, providing you with a safe space to speak openly and honestly without worrying about how others might react or be affected. The focus is entirely on you, your experiences, thoughts, and feelings. The presence of another person can unintentionally shift this focus and may influence what you choose to share.

How do I pay?

Payment can be made by either bank transfer or cash.

Payment is expected prior to or at the start of each session.

What if I need to cancel a session?

Cancellation should be made as far in advance as possible by email. hello@fundamentalcounselling.co.uk. Sessions cancelled more than 24 hours in advance will not be charged. Sessions cancelled with less than 24 hours’ notice are chargeable at the full rate.
